Protect Your Pets on Their Least Favorite Holiday

By admin | July 2, 2008

If you own a dog, you probably realize that they hate Fourth of July. Its the annual Freak Out Day for dogs and more dogs run away on the Fourth of July than any other day of the year. I urge all pet owners to take extra precaution on Fourth of July. Here are some tips that should help.

1. Make certain that your dog has an updated ID tag with your address. Thousands of dogs lose their home each year on Fourth of July simply because whoever finds them can’t locate their owners.

2. Around mid-day as the fireworks begin to start, place your pet in the basement with a few new toys and some fresh food. It will take their minds off of the fireworks and assure you that they can’t run away. A new bone or a rawhide will be a nice treat.

3. Do not take your pet to any fireworks displays and do not leave your pet locked in a car on the Fourth of July. In fact, don’t leave your pet locked in a car for longer than 30 minutes any time of the year. How would you like to be locked in a car  without knowing how to get out while watching strangers walk by?

4. If your dog is excited easily, consult with your vet to see how you can keep them calm on the Fourth of July.

Follow these tips and your pet should have a safe FOURTH

    Good tips.

In the most extreme cases the vet will have to knock them out with a little acepromazine.

    My dogs hate the fourth!
